Water & Sanitation

Young people represent more than half of the global population and yet, they are not meaningfully included in the majority of the decision-making processes around water. It’s important that they are recognized and respected as leaders, especially those from the most marginalised communities, markedly in terms of gender, race, and income.

During her tenure as Vice President of the World Youth Parliament for Water (WYPW) Danielle has worked to prioritize water issues, and to help create platforms for youth’s perspectives to be recognized on these issues. She has also mobilized youth voices, co-drafted youth declarations, and presented them during the World Forums, UN High level conferences, workshops, and much more.

From raising awareness to recognize youth voices as change makers in the water sectors, to pushing for more youth representation in established water institutions and organizations, Danielle has led on the implementation of local decentralized projects on community levels from Africa to Latin America, and Asia. She has advocated, and drafted youth declarations for youth knowledge and actions, to be valued by employers, authorities, funders and integrated into water management planning and programming.

In 2021, she participated as a judge and a leader to 2021 UNICEF Africa Hackathon, showcasing youth voices’ promising ideas and innovative solutions to end open defecation in West and Central Africa. She has also mobilized youth voices, co-drafting youth declarations, and presenting them during the World Water Forums, UN High level conference on Water, and much more. In 2022, Danielle presented for the first time ever, the youth declaration for the UN Water decade during the 36th UN-Water roundtable.

Field mission: Mangrove clean up, Bali, Indonesia

Danielle founded the African Youth Parliament for Water (AYPW) in 2022, working towards the Harmonisation of Local Action and Policies Implementation, from local to regional level, and unlocking the African youth potential, and empowering them to deal with local and global water challenges by cooperating and sharing collective knowledge, experiences, and skills. The AYPW network is scaled in 24 African countries aiming to reach the all 54 countries on the continent. In every country where an AYPW chapter is implemented, young leaders have access to hard-to-reach and neglected areas and communities, feeding in their perspectives into the national ‘in progress’ youth policies and local action activities.

She has taken several leadership roles within the water sector, and has represented youth’s perspectives at several high panel events, with UNICEF, UN-Water, GIZ, the Blue Water School Network, the government of the Netherlands, the International Secretariat for Water, Water Youth Network, UNESCO, etc.
